Abstract

Liset Cruz: Shannon Casas, Managing Editor, The Gainesville Times

While at The Times, I had the opportunity to create an opinion piece on the results of the 2016 Presidential Election. With my hispanic heritage and being the daughter of immigrants, I decided to focus on the President’s view of hispanics and immigration. The main idea surrounding the President’s view was his idea to build a wall. While writing my paper, I came to the conclusion that many people do not know or understand the reasons behind the coming of immigrants, and so the beginning of my research began. Immigrants have played a substantial role in the foundation of our country ever since the beginning. During the development and maturation of this country, several different waves of immigration have occurred. Each wave has had its reasons and impact on our country, but the question remains; Why have they come here? With what means do they decide to leave everything behind and come here by any means necessary? I’ve uncovered different issues and factors behind each immigration wave and have focused on the principle countries in which the immigrants come from. Several factors that include economical status of  a country, social standing of the population and political corruption of certain countries have all helped explain the different reasons of why people have come to this country and why they will continue to come.
