Mitchell, Amy, and Jesse Holcomb. "State of the News Media 2016." Pew Research Center's

        Journalism Project. N.p., 15 June 2016. Web. 6 Nov. 2016.

The document is very well written and easy to understand. It is fact-based and includes a variety of statistics, results, and testing from the extensive outreach to career professionals. The topic of the research is interesting and something I have never thought about or even took into consideration the amount of future jobs within the career field.. I now feel that I have a better understanding of this topic and of what the future may hold. Using the document seems simple at best. Since it provides differing data from different media outlets, I’ll make sure to mention most of them when presenting it as the research topic. The resources they use are credible because they conducted surveys and polls and gathered trends in jobs from multiple sub-industries. The results of each of the studies are honest and real. They provide the insight that is needed for young journalists and thus help to provide a better understanding of how the media has been changing and will continue to change..

Wills, Charles A. Wills A. "Destination America." PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 19 Jan. 2017.

The entire web page is based on the book, Destination America written by Chuck Wills, and in which the module explains various aspects of the immigration process. Included in the modules are questions such as “Why did they come?” and “When did they come?” In addition, as answers, separate modules are offered. Most of them with titles that begin with Freedom From/To, these modules include a great deal of information about the history of immigrants. Under the “Freedom of Oppression”, the article concludes that the majority of immigrants in the 1980’s from Guatemala and El Salvador came to America to escape an “unjust, unrepresentative, and tyrannical government.” This article gave me the broad sense of the history of immigrants and provided great details about immigrants from all over the world from different times in history.

Myers, Dowell. Immigrants and boomers: Forging a new social contract for the future of America. Russell                Sage Foundation, 2007.

This book highlights the complete history of immigration. While mainly focusing on the arrival of immigrants, this book covers the demographics of immigrants. The book is divided into four sections; “Immigration and the Great Transition”, “ Self-Interest and Governance”, “Mutual Self-Interest for a Hopeful Future” and “A Shared Destiny and A New Social Contract”. By dividing the book, the author makes a clearer image of what is to be explained. The author, Dowell Myers is a current professor of Urban Planning and Demography at the University of Southern California. He has a degree from Columbia University and Harvard University. I believe this makes him and his book quite credible.

Interview

What is your opinion on immigration and undocumented immigrants? What is your understanding on both?        -   Immigration is necessary for a society to grow and develop in a positive manner whether that be legal or illegal. Legal immigration can be extremely difficult and more often than not the illegal immigrants are those who wanted to enter a country legally but found themselves put down by the process.

Reflection: I agree with the answer stated above. As a population, diversity and different social classes help the country overall.

Do you know someone personally who is an immigrant/ undocumented immigrant? If so, what is your relationship with them?

        - Yes, both of my parents are immigrants and so is the rest of my extended family that lives in America.

Reflection: I have a similar view to this, because I am also a daughter of immigrants.

Why/How do you believe immigrants come to America? What do you think they do once they arrive?

       -   They come for a better opportunity for either them or their families or they're running away from something bad. Once they arrive they tend to find basic necessities like food and shelter then they go to find jobs to support themselves or their families.

Reflection: I also agree with the statement above. My parents came to this country to have a better life and find better jobs.

How often do you think about the topic? How regularly do you believe that undocumented immigrants affect your way of life, if at all?

     - I don't give it much thought unless the topic is brought up in some way. I don't believe illegal immigrants affect my life in any conscious way.

Reflection: In a day, I possibly think about the topic perhaps once a day. Economically, I believe that illegal immigrants do affect us but personally, in my everyday life, I don't believe illegal immigrants affect me directly.

The majority of undocumented immigrants (59%) are coming from Mexico. Our president, Donald J. Trump, has called Mexicans “criminals”, “rapists” and “bad hombres” and in more recent times, Trump has suggested bringing U.S troops to Mexico to deal with said “Bad Hombres”. Based on your knowledge, how do you agree/disagree with President Trump’s words?

-I don't agree with what he says, though it may be partially true, a majority of undocumented immigrants are harmless. There will always be bad people in any group, though. There are rapists, criminals, and bad hombres within American citizens. They're status says nothing about their character.

Reflection: I also agree with the statement above. There are bad people within every racial or ethnic group, but generalizing them as a whole is not correct.

What knowledge do you have about the condition of living of other countries? Mexico has had an ongoing, and to this day, war on drugs which has costed the lives of about 80,000.

        - I have a surface knowledge of how other countries are running, mainly stuff I read about.

Reflection: As a Mexican-American, I attempt to keep myself informed about all major world news, but I can also understand how and why some people don't maintain themselves informed.

Several studies, from the National Bureau of Economic Research and CATO institute, have concluded that immigrants “are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States.” Yet, President Trump has called for reports on crimes that undocumented immigrants have committed. Do you believe that this is going to be effective in any way? Explain, if so.

        -  It'll be effective in convincing the already spiteful U.S. citizens that illegal immigrants are bad people, but to the educated individual it will mean nothing.

Reflection: I understand the view point of the statement. Some of President Trumps followers are extremists and would take into serious consideration the reports that would be released.

In what ways do you believe that immigrants help/ harm the United States Economy?

         - Immigrants help the economy by doing jobs most people aren't willing to do and they cause a demand for work to rise which then sets of company growth.

Reflection: The majority of illegal immigrants maintain steady jobs that most people would willingly do.

How do you believe that we can better the immigration process?

           - Finding a better way to get immigrants legalized would greatly help the process. It takes far too long for immigrants to even receive a green card let alone citizenship.

Reflection: I agree with the statement above. The process is far too lengthy to work effectly.

What do you believe should be done about the undocumented immigrants residing in Georgia?

          -   I say let them stay in peace just as they were.

Reflection: I somewhat agree with this statement. While I agree with the deportation of criminals, the majority of illegal immigrants are harmless and are just here to work and make a better future for their families.

My Essential Question: How can I validate the reasons behind the coming of immigrants into the U.S. while educating and explaining the current state of American Immigrants?

I want to know what people understand about immigrants in the state of our society. I am the daughter of immigrant parents. I know their story and their struggles but what I wish to do is make other people understand and acknowledge that immigrants are human beings who are worthy of rights and that they simply do not come to this country because they want to but because they need to in order to make a better life for their family and children. Simply educating, not only myself but those around me, will benefit me. With the knowledge that I acquire through this research, I will not stop there. I will take this knowledge and spread it throughout my entire life.

From the stories that I have heard, not only from my own family, but also from some of my friends families, I can assume that the majority of immigrants come to this country to escape corruption and make a better life for their families. With the new presidential administration, I have felt a new wave of feeling towards immigrants, especially from Latin American countries. For example, my father came here at the age of 16 to make his family's life better, and recently I have been receiving ugly stares from people when I speak spanish to him. Once, an elderly man had the nerve to tell us that “This is America, we speak english here”. It was too late for me to say something when I had realized what he had said. To escape corruption from your native country and come to a completely new place with a different language and culture, only to be newly disrespected is completely unnecessary to me. The corruption and poverty that I have personally seen in the streets of Mexico are absolutely devastating. From seeing children selling gum in the streets to witnessing a bribe to a police officer, some people do not trust their own community and in order to seek safety and the possibility of a better socio-economic life, they migrate to this country.

The majority of my sources came from experts, such as professors and immigration based organizations. I believe that the information is as unbiased as it could be. Throughout the research, I came across little opinions; the majority of the information was factual and based on studies and demographics. First, I came across information that uncovered situations in other countries that drove the people out of that certain country. Other sources uncovered the economic downfalls that also led people to immigrate. From personal stories to historical facts, people have had their reasons for coming into the U.S.

What I discovered is mainly the history behind the European immigration waves. As a person who has first-hand primary sources, immigration is a part of my life. Everything I knew was simply backed up by the sources I had found. Some conclusions from this research project is that I was able to inform some my friends about the information that I found. In a way, immigration has had great impacts on the development of this country. With greater diversity, a country is able to successfully flourish. With my newfound knowledge, I believe I can become a leader and activist for immigrants. I can have a voice for those who cannot speak.
